Tuition Policy 2016

We are honored to have the opportunity to work with you, and we take this commitment as seriously as you do.

Our goal is to keep you as satisfied members of our musical family for at least as long as it takes to master your instrument, 10,000 hours or 20 years, whichever comes first. We want you to love this music school, and you are a vital part of our happy family. To that end, we make the following commitments to you:

  1. We promise to give you the best possible, custom-tailored music lessons for your personal and/or family’s needs.

  2. We promise to do everything in our power to keep your lessons starting and ending on time, and to work hard to minimize schedule changes.

  3. We will work hard to provide you with highly trained, positive, knowledgeable, and encouraging teachers

  4. We promise to give you a learning environment that is positive, motivating, and energizing at all times.

  5. We will provide you with waiting areas that are comfortable, with guest wifi access, and video feeds of the teaching rooms where your children/family members are taking lessons.

  6. We promise to give you clear instructions on what is expected for play at home.

  7. We promise to give you access to the best instruments in the world, at the lowest prices commercially available, for learning on at your lessons, and for your purchase for playing at home.

  8. We promise to make sure your student’s progress is clearly documented by music professionals through I.C.M.E., every six months, and to give them awards, including certificates, medals, and plaques to promote extraordinary achievement biannually.

  9. We promise to provide several student concerts each year, allowing our students to prepare pieces completely and practice performing them at least twice per year, every six months.

When students succeed we know more time in lessons, with multiple teachers, and multiple instruments, is the best way to support their growth and keep interest high. We have many ways to increase your exposure to music all through the week, including 18 teachers that teach many different instruments, reduced cost lessons from apprentice teachers, and free tutoring from student tutors. All students with at least a 30 min lesson are eligible to request a free tutoring. teVelde tutors have undergone extensive certification training which includes personality type, learning style, perfect pitch, and curriculum components. (Tutors are not allowed to be a student's primary teacher, nor are they allowed to assign new material.) This is available on a first come, first served basis. We also have apprentice level teachers available for a reduced rate. These teachers have completed tutor training, having tutored at least 2 students for 6 months, and having completed teacher training 1. The reduced rate is available for 6 months, until the teacher becomes certified as a Level 1 teacher.

We believe that one of the best ways to learn is to mentor others. When you have had the equivalent of 100 hours of lessons, 4 ICME adjudications including 1 medal, and reached at least the age of 8, you are eligible to take tutor training camps and become a certified teVelde tutor. If you are successful at tutoring, and have at least 200 hours of teVelde lessons, 8 ICME adjudications including 2 medals and 1 plaque, have tutored at teVelde for 50 hours, and reached the age of 15, you are eligible to apply for an apprentice level teaching job. Apprentice level teachers are available to teach teVelde students at a reduced rate. Please call Kezia for more details. (These are only available as a second lesson in a week, not as the primary lesson of the week.)

Students who are Certified as teVelde Teachers, Level 1 or Higher, by age 17 will be entitled to a full recommendation letters personalized for 4 scholarship committee reviews, and 4 college applications of their choice written and signed by Bonnie J. teVelde, CEO.

The teVelde Conservatory of Music is accredited by I.C.M.E., an organization that sets the highest standards of musical education for its members. It is mandatory for all students to participate and have their progress documented twice a year.

Security Cameras in Classrooms:  As a part of regular lessons at TCM, all lessons are videotaped on a closed circuit video system. These recordings are used to allow parents and management the ability to monitor the quality of each lesson taught, as well as to assure the safety and well-being of every student and teacher. These recordings are for in-house and insurance documentation only. TeVelde makes no guarantees that the lesson recordings will be kept longer than two weeks, but some recordings may be kept in our system longer than that to be used for teacher training purposes, and/or to document any student or insurance related incidents on site.

Video/Photo Recording of Students:  We are PROUD of our Students! From time to time teVelde Music documents student progress through lessons, classes, adjudication, events, and concerts. Student and/or guardian grants permission for teVelde Music, Inc., to use student's image, likeness, and/or voice in promotional, school related, and/or online social media posts without compensation to student, parent and/or guardian. By agreeing to this contract, we release teVelde Music from any liability in relation to the use of student's image, likeness, or voice.

For teachers who work hourly for a living, it can be a significant sacrifice to have to come in on a day scheduled as “off” to make up a lesson for a student who doesn’t come at their regular time. Your teacher is ready and waiting to teach at your regular lesson time, and to ask for a second time costs that teacher the added expense of daycare, driving, and the loss of personal time with their families. We have created this policy carefully, so as to respect parents in their support of their child, as well as respecting the teacher, and the support of their lives. Please get to know other parents that bring their children before or after you do, and get their phone numbers. Many of our parents work together to trade lesson times if they have a conflict due to sports or other school activities. You can also contact other parents through our facebook pages. There is one page for each campus of teVelde Music.

  1. Excused Absences: Students may reschedule one (1) lesson per three month period, as long as you give your teacher at least 24 hours notice before the lesson is missed, and make up the lesson within 2 months.  If your teacher does not have openings for makeups, there will be a teacher available to do makeups on one Saturday per month. Please call Operations Manager, Kezia Liu, to schedule a Saturday makeup: (805) 474-1224. Makeups may not be available in both locations. (The schools are only 9 miles apart.)

  2. Late Cancels/No Shows: teVelde has a 24-hour cancellation policy. From time to time students get ill without much notice. We are sorry, but we can not allow make ups for lessons missed without 24 hours notice.

  3. Illness: If you/your child has an illness, please do not bring them to lessons. If a student is brought in sick, they will be asked to leave without having a lesson, and no refund given. Illnesses include: any fever above 99, strep, cough, lice, pinkeye, pneumonia (viral or bacterial), chicken pox, measles, mumps, colds, stuffy noses (except allergies), sore throat, etc. You may not make up lessons lost due to illness discovered within 24 hours of your lesson time.

  4. Teacher Absences: If the teacher misses a lesson, we may bring in an appropriate substitute teacher to teach. If a sub cannot be obtained, or there is a reason why the student should not have a substitute, the teacher will schedule a time for the student to make up the lesson, as conveniently as possible for the Student.

A great way to get to know other parents is through our facebook pages. We highly encourage you to post photos of your child playing songs. Other parents regularly post, and you can easily put out a call for someone to trade lesson times, photos, and practice tips with you this way. You can also put out a call for a practice buddy, which is incredibly exciting for our students. Just go to and type in “The TeVelde Conservatory of Music: San Luis Obispo” or “The Tevelde Conservatory of Music: Arroyo Grande”. Friend us to get the latest news about concerts, camps, classes, and more.

As a family oriented school, we realize that holidays often mean family time! We don’t want any of your lessons to go to waste! Please feel free to bring visiting family members into the conservatory, give them a tour, and have them sit in on your lessons for a private concert or even a lesson! We may be able to set up a fun intro lesson for them at the same time as your current lessons! Many of our students are out of school or on vacation from work during those weeks. We offer multiple options for making up lessons that fall on a Holiday. (It is best to get as many extra lessons in as possible, and makeup any lessons that have been missed during the school year.)

During the Holidays, please work with your teacher and decide whether you would like to:

  1. Come at your regularly scheduled lesson time

  2. Come at a different time/different day with your teacher,

  3. Schedule a makeup for these lessons with a different teacher for the same instrument (Saturday makeup day)

  4. Schedule a makeup with a different teacher to try a different instrument, or voice,

  5. Keep the lessons on account to apply to a camp program,

  6. Gift the lesson to a friend or relative, (brother, sister, aunt, uncle, mother, father, grandparent, friend) to use any way they like.

  7. Donate the lesson value to MUSE for a student with extreme hardships. (You will receive a tax deductable receipt)

  8. Request these days off (2 per year limit) with no makeup. Your next payment will be reduced by the amount of the lesson.

Please call the school or email us at at least 2 weeks in advance to let us know which option you would like to pursue. At any time, you can go onto our mindbody system and see exactly how many lessons you have had in a given year by looking at your visit history. Just look at your visit history, and you will see the dates and type of lesson.

Our scheduled closures are as follows:

  • Easter

  • Memorial Day

  • 4th of July

  • Labor Day

  • Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday

  • Christmas Day

  • New Year’s Day

Our schools will be closing early (5:00 pm) on:

  • 4th of July

  • Christmas Eve

  • New Year’s Eve

If you need to be gone for longer than two (2) weeks, you may request a leave of absence in writing, and put your tuition on hold. This request must be made in writing, at least 15 days in advance of the absence. You must state the amount of time that you will be gone, and include a date when you will return. The account must be paid up to date as of the date of the absence. TCM will not hold open time slots/days for students on leave, and student will have to accept the openings available upon their return. When the student returns, they will simply pay for the number of lessons in the current month, and on the 25th of the month, the annual tuition plan will go back into effect for the next full month. Any breaks longer than 2 weeks that do not have a leave of absence request on file will be classified as “discontinued lessons”, and there will be a $50 registration fee to be put back on the calendar for lessons.

Before one is going to quit or suspend lessons, we ask that you come and speak with us. Many times we can adjust lesson times, days, or teachers that would fix the problem that is causing the discontinuance. If, after speaking with us, you still decide to discontinue lessons, 30 days notice must be given in writing. At that time, whatever lessons have been prepaid for, will be finished out. If one student is discontinuing lessons, but one or more siblings are continuing, the sibling’s tuition may be applied to the other student’s lessons as long as there are at least 2 lessons with the student is leaving left. This is to provide adequate closure to the student who is leaving.

For customers who prefer to pay their tuition on an annual, or semi-annual basis, we have premiums available as follows:

  1. 6 months: 5% more lessons added to the account

  2. 12 months: 8% more lessons added to account (roughly one month of lessons)

The full amount will be charged at the beginning of the period. One month before the tuition is used up, an invoice will be sent out for the next tuition period. The monthly tuition will be charged to the card on file on the 25th of the month preceding the new term period. Customers may pay with cash, check, or credit card provided that the payment is received no later than the 25th of the month prior to the start of the new term.

teVelde monthly tuition is paid via Credit Card auto-payment, or e-check. All account activity including number of lessons taken and dates, and tuition payment history, is available online at  You can update your own payment credit card online. That information is kept completely confidential. Please note: A charge of $15 may be added to your account for tuition payment that late due to credit card denial.  A $25 Non-Sufficient Funds charge may be added to your account for returned e-checks.

We believe that telling your friends about us is the greatest honor you can give us. If you send someone our way, please let us know so we can give you a complimentary 1-hour lesson* when they sign up. If you leave a 5 star review for us online*, you will receive a $5 cash credit towards your monthly tuition. *Eligible sites include: Yelp (both locations), facebook (both locations),,,,, and any other site that has legitimate music lesson ratings. There is no limit on how many sites you can leave a review for us on, as long as they are 5 star reviews. You can also collect yelp or facebook “checkins”. 10 checkins gets you a free teVelde T-shirt and/or other bonus items.

We have founded a 501C3 non-profit corporation specifically to provide money for music lessons for people with disabilities and/or extreme financial hardships. If you have ideas for fundraising, we would be very grateful for any help we can get. Many of our MUSE students end up being students that are tutored by our children as they become tutors. Please call Bonnie directly at (805)801-6200 if you have any ideas on fundraising for MUSE. Any students who receive MUSE scholarships will be required to re-qualify for that scholarship each year in December. MUSE reserves the right to deny scholarships if there is a lack of funding or instruments available. Students who wish to apply for a MUSE scholarship may contact Bonnie for more information or a scholarship application form. MUSE also has high quality pianos available for use for FREE for eligible students with hardships. (first come, first served)

Your account is set up in our appointment management system, which allows you to see all previous appointments, current and future scheduling information, billing history, and to adjust billing information. All client information will be kept under the name of the student. This includes parent information, payment information, visit history, and all other notes and contact information. Please go to your account page and make sure that all of the information is correct, including student birthdate (important for registering for camps with age limitations), email address (for notifications of ICME and concerts), and email preferences.

We will do everything we can to make sure that our students and their families are happy and excited about learning music! Every once and awhile, questions may come up about lessons, personalities, or motivation levels. Please don’t hesitate to call us and talk to us about them, BEFORE they become problems. At any time we can make adjustments in lesson times, teachers, or the instrument that could fix the problem before it becomes a big deal. If we ever fail to meet these objectives, please do not hesitate to let us know. Welcome to our musical family!
