School of Rock Summer Camp 2012

Our Goal is to Make This the Best Summer Music Camp Ever Held in SLO County, for the Third Year in a row!

If you've seen the movie "School of Rock" with Jack Black, you already have some idea of the format of our summer camp. The only difference is that each class is limited to 5 students per teacher. This provides an intensive jump start for every music student, on multiple instruments! Students receive intensive music lessons for two (2) weeks, two (2) hours a day. At the end of the session, students will perform for parents and friends in a band and take home a CD of a song they have created.

DATES of Summer Camp, 2012

Session I of Summer Camp, 2012, will be held from June 25-July 6. Camp is Monday through Friday, from 12:30-2:30pm. The final performance and barbecue for parents on Friday evening, July 8th, from 7-8pm.

Session I, Advanced, will be held from July 9-13, 12:30-2:30pm. Students who participated in Session I will have the opportunity to work for an extra week on the instrument of their choice. Focus of this session will be on advanced skills in playing as a band, and preparation for inclusion in jam night during the year, if desired.

Session II of Summer Camp, 2012, will be held from July 23-Aug 3, Camp is Monday through Friday, from 12:30-2:30pm. The final performance and barbecue for parents on Friday evening, July 5th, from 7-8pm.

Session II, Advanced, will be held from Aug 6-10, 12:30-2:30pm. Students who participated in either Session I or II will have the opportunity to work for an extra week on the instrument of their choice. Focus of this session will be on advanced skills in playing as a band, and preparation for inclusion in jam night during the year, if desired.

To assure your child has the best experience, we are limiting enrollment to a 5-1 student/teacher ratio.

Curriculum

Every day the students learn one instrumental part to a song. This year we will take suggestions from our students and create a list of their favorite songs. Each group will choose the song they want to work on.

For beginning music students, this experience will provide a chance to try 5 different instruments and voice for 2 weeks. They will learn to play a song on keyboard/piano, guitar, bass, and drums, and learn to sing the melody line. In addition, they will learn how a recording studio works, and get an opportunity to construct a song.

For more experienced music students, this camp will provide an opportunity to learn to play even more advanced parts of the music.

All students will learn to play the instruments in a rock & roll band. Students will be trying out keyboard/piano, guitar, bass, drums, and voice, but they will also get an opportunity to play their favorite instrument in a band situation. They will work with a band coach, giving them an opportunity to experience what playing in a real band feels like. The bands created at camp may have the opportunity to continue to play as a band after camp is over, in Jam Night.

We will have a limited amount of loaner instruments for students to take home when they are practicing instrument parts for instruments they don't own (ie: keyboards, guitars, bass, drums).

Cost of Summer Camp

There is a maximum of 5 students per instructor. Total cost per session is $360, plus a $15 materials fee. There is a 10% discount for students who want to attend both sessions. There is also a 10% sibling discount. Contact us for more information on combining discounts. Participation in the advanced sessions is by invitation only, and students must have participated in a two-week session prior to the advanced session, in the current summer.

Enrollment and More Information

This is a small, intimate learning experience, with a maximum number of 5 students per teacher, 10 students per session. Students are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Camp is open to students from 4th through 8th grade. "Bands" are created/grouped by putting together students of similar ability levels and ages.
