What is this?
Jam Night is a project by teVelde
Music to give its intermediate and advanced students the opportunity
to play in an actual band configuration.
What will they play?
We've selected a variety of songs that A) are likely to be
known to the students and B) do not require playing ability that is necessarily
beyond that of our students. Having said that, we also note that the
"Guitar Hero" series of games are very popular with the students, and they're
likely to know all of those songs. So, in the lists that follow,
we've listed the songs from Guitar Hero separately.
Where is it?
Currently, we're looking at playing at our new campus in San Luis Obispo. All amplification, microphones, keyboards, bass, and drums are provided.
The student needs to bring any music they need.
When is it?
We're currently looking at Sundays from about 6:00-8:00p.m.
Are you forming a band?
Well, "no" and "yes". The purpose of this isn't to get a bunch of musicians
together and say "go". The purpose is to teach them how to play as a
band, working with the ebb and flow of the song, using everyone's strengths
and weaknesses to produce a rewarding overall musical experience for players
and audience. It is also to teach them how to conduct productive, result-oriented
rehearsals (as opposed to everyone gathering in the garage with their instruments
and talking about what went on at school that day). Now, having said that,
we would like to take some of our better players and enter them
in a talent contest or two or maybe play at Farmer's Market in SLO or something.
Note to Parents:
We haven't vetted all of these songs for lyrical content.
If you're worried about "bad words" that your child may hear, please look
up the lyrics for these songs and let us know if you want us to have the
song sung differently or not at all.
Will I get to play on every song?
Depending upon how many students want to play, we may have
to resort to a "reservation" system, where students can sign up to play
a certain instrument on a certain song at the next Jam Night.
Great! Who do we talk to?
You can either talk to Bonnie at one of the schools or email Joe
Emenaker at joe@emenaker.com
The songs below are rated by their difficulty at each instrument. "E" for
Easy, "I" for Intermediate, and "A" for Advanced.
Songs from "Guitar Hero" and "Guitar Hero II":
You can get Guitar Guru music from this Musicnotes website,
and it will take you through the actual song riffs, at gradually faster speeds,
until you learn them. They have tablature and fretboards right on the screen
that help you learn where on the guitar to play so you don't waste any time
guessing. Just click on this link, and you can download the Guitar Guru software
to your computer, free. Then, you buy the music that has the "Guitar
Guru" symbol on it, and it will work right on your home computer.
